On Top of Roan Mountain June 2009

In June of 2009 I made 2 trips up to Roan Mountain at the NC - TN border.  For a total of 4 days of hiking-painting and 2 nights in my camper truck.  I take a lot of day trips and occasional overnight  painting excursions, but this trip was phenomenal and I had no one to share it with, so I thought it would be great if I could show you some of what I experienced painting and hiking.  I find it hard to believe so many people in North Carolina have never visited this most awesome place.

Grassy Ridge Bald at 6,200ft. is about a 2.5 mile hike from Carver's Gap parking lot

Sometimes 13 colors on the outdoor palette is a bit lacking for a scene like this

I think rhododendrons are most striking on an overcast day

This scene would not be a good subject to paint but I just had to anyway.

The trail you see is the Appalachian Trail which goes from Georgia to Maine

Flame Azaleas' with thunder on the horizon.  Time to high tail it out of here

Time to pack it up

On the way home there is a beautiful creek along NC261 at Bakersville

Just had to try.
